Breakthroughs in miniaturization are transforming treatment, providing minimally invasive solutions as an alternative to complex open surgery techniques.

To meet this challenge, Nexans NEWSENSE® medical microcables allow manufacturers to build more convenience and intelligence into investigative, diagnostic and therapeutic equipment. The prime beneficiaries are surgeons, physicians and patients who appreciate their safety, comfort and cosmetic discretion.

“ We are focused on accompanying our customers in the development of new cable designs in ultra-miniature formats which can carry more functions (sensing, video, ultrasound, power) and higher data rates. We strive to work with our customers from the beginning of projects in order to adapt at the best our cable design not only to their own production process (cutting, stripping, soldering, overmoulding….) but also to end user constrains (flexibility, handiness, cosmetic…). Nexans research centers and all our R&D teams are firstly focused on customers driven innovation ”

For example, Nexans produces invasive microcables dedicated to trans-catheter technology in cardiovascular electrophysiology. These cables are intended to transmit sensor signals for mapping and guiding surgeons inside the body and to provide them data measurements in real time to control the operation. Nexans also offers invasive “lead-in wires” linked to external pacemakers, and customized cable solutions for endoscopy.

The NEWSENSE® offer also contains numerous non-invasive cables for imaging applications. It includes hybrid multi-function cables for large imaging systems, like radiography, magnetic resonance imaging/ MRI, computer tomography, nuclear camera/scanners, and multi micro-coaxial cables for ultrasound probes. Nexans works closely with OEMs to create specific solutions drawing on its extensive knowledge of various process, materials, and cable design. Customer product portfolio rationalization and cost-reduction programs can also be carried out conjointly.

Some main benefits of New sense cable range are as follows:

  • Medical grade materials , biocompatibility according  to ISO 10993 allowing FDA qualification.
  • Resistance to all sterilization techniques: ETO, autoclave, gamma rays, etc.
  • Low friction materials ideal for easy catheter insertion.
  • Optimal flexibility for confined space and dynamic application
  • Mechanical strength and long life-time thanks to conductors in specific alloys
  • Cosmetic appearance and comfort, especially for physician probes.
  • Efficient electromagnetic shield  protecting from internal (inside device) and external disturbances (environment)

Medical industry customers using Nexans’ NEWSENSE® medical microcables have the added confidence that their cables are manufactured to the very highest quality standard applied in the medical device industry. Indeed, Nexans’ Draveil plant, France is ISO 13485 certified, that covers the production, development and quality control processes for medical devices and their components

“ Our Draveil plant has always maintained the very highest quality standards and this certification is an important third-party verification of our ongoing commitment to our products reliability and continuous improvement ”
