Korean Government Research Institute chooses Nexans for the supply of HTS Wire
Paris, October 25, 2001 - Nexans, the worldwide leader in the cable industry, has signed an agreement with the Korean Electrotechnology Research Institute (KERI) for the supply of high temperature superconducting (HTS) wire. The agreement between Nexans and KERI is part of the research activities undertaken within the framework of the 21st Century Frontier Research and Development Project sponsored by the Korean Ministry of Science and Technology.
The Ministry of Science and Technology is planning to invest 85 million euros for superconductivity-related applications in the coming 10 years.
Nexans� Korean subsidiary will manufacture the high strength HTS wire which can carry 100 times more current than a conventional copper wire with the same cross section. This HTS wire is expected to be used in various industrial applications such as superconducting cables, transformers, motors and fault current limiters.
In Korea, Nexans has been involved since 1997 in superconductivity projects carried out in partnership with the KERI and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA).
