Nexans wins an 18 Million Euros contract in Thailand
High voltage submarine cable will link the mainland to Thailand’s third largest island
Paris, December 21, 2005 - Nexans, the worldwide leader in the cable industry, has signed an 18 Million Euros contract with Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) to supply a submarine high voltage link between Khanom, on the mainland, and Ko Samui Island, Thailand’s third largest island, in the Gulf of Siam. For this contract, Nexans is participating in a consortium with Italian Thai Development PCL, one of the major builders of Thailand's infrastructures.
Nexans is supplying and installing 24 km of 115 kV 3-cores XLPE power cable and related accessories. This cable consists of three 240 mm² copper conductors with a single layer of galvanised steel wire armour, including a 24 fibre optic cable. This new high voltage link will be installed in parallel with the existing 115kV oil-filled submarine connection commissioned in 1996. This time, PEA has chosen the “new generation” of high voltage cable with XLPE insulation, easier to install and less demanding in term of maintenance.
Development of tourism: exponential growth of power consumption
The high voltage transmission link from the power plant in Khanom to Ko Samui island will carry a 100 MW capacity. It will nearly double the power capacity available on the island and fulfill the ever-growing demand for electricity in this region. This is due to the rapidly accelerating growth in tourism causing exponential increase in power consumption. PEA considers that its need for additional power capacity is growing from 10 to 15 per cent per year.
A long relationship
“Nexans expertise in this new 3-cores XLPE technology for submarine cables together with our strong commitment to support this project and historical presence in Thaïland have been the key factors for winning this contract” said Patrick Barth, Managing Director of Nexans’ High Voltage activity. He adds: “After the disaster caused by the tsunami one year ago, Nexans is all the more concerned and proud, today, to help Thailand to contribute to develop this area”.
The 115kV submarine cables will be manufactured at Nexans’ Halden plant (Norway).
Nexans will be responsible for the installation of this submarine link.
The project should be completed by summer 2007.
